Botswana banned the legal hunting of elephants in 2014, only to have to reimplement it in 2019 after too much human-elephant conflict led to 17 deaths in one year between 2018-2019. Now Western animal rights groups are pressuring the US and UK government to stop selling the licenses, or tags, needed to legally hunt game. African elephant range countries feel this is neocolonialism and don’t want to be told how to manage their natural resources.
