Animal Legislative Update - Jan. 27, 2026
from the desk of Vanessa Gagne

UPDATES

  • HEARING 1/27, Tuesday - ME LD 2096 - Ag Fairs and Pulling Events
  • HEARING 1/28, Wednesday - WA HB 2129 - Fortifying Agritourism
  • HEARING 2/5/26 - MD HB 0053 - expands the list of prohibited animals to include kangaroos, wallaroos, wallabies, and zebras, without ZAA exemption.
  • HEARING 2/25/25 - NY S 252 - Relates to wild or exotic animals.
  • Way back in March of 2024 I shared an article about animal rights activists protesting turtle races at a place called Brennan's Pub in Marina Del Rey. Unfortunately, due to relentless pressure, the pub - open since 1975 - has not just ended the turtle races; it has closed permanently. IDA is celebrating this end to a small business.
  • IDA is back on their campaign to ban rodeos in Worcester, MA
  • Thousands of pet monkeys could be seized as ban looms - In GB, primate owners have until April to register their pets or face confiscation. This article highlights the following:
    • Authorities are relying on neighbors to report on one another
    • The government does not have homes for every single animal. If the end result would be to confiscate every last one of them, they will look to euthanize those animals with health issues first.
    • Lastly, animal rights groups got this passed and now are asking the government for funding for more sanctuaries, instead of having established the facilities and funding beforehand. (which could result in more instances of bullet point 2!)
