    Raising the Bar on Safety

The OABA has partnered with Corporate Security Solutions, Inc. (CSSI) a highly respected online background check company to bring you this new member benefit.

We are pleased to announce a new safety initiative and a terrific benefit for OABA Members — one that will enhance your company hiring standards, reduce your costs, and most importantly keep your patrons and workplace safe.

Background checks are an essential safety measure for the Mobile Amusement industry, but they can sometimes be a logistical and financial challenge. “That’s why the OABA has partnered with CSSI to simplify and lower the cost of background checks for our Members” stated Bob Johnson, OABA President.  “CSSI features an online background check platform that uses proprietary technologies and unique criminal locators to deliver high-quality and accurate background checks.”

We have arranged a per-check discount price for OABA Members and even bigger discounts for Circle of Excellence recipients amounting to an additional 15% off.

CSSI’s Tri-Eye check will be used as a basis for all background checks for OABA Members. This includes not only Name, Address, and Social Security verification but Enhanced National Criminal records, National Sexual Predators list (aka Megan’s Law), OIG Sanctions and Terrorist Watch list.  Each Member will have their own separate secured online portal.  Once the information is entered, you will receive your results in minutes.

We are working closely with Stephanie Glysson from CSSI, to introduce the company’s capabilities to our Members. You can contact Stephanie at 800-203-4731.  You can also read more about CSSI at www.eyeforsecurity.com

We hope you will share our excitement about this new service with other OABA members, which has the potential to save you, our Members -- considerable time and even greater money along with the peace of mind in keeping your Patrons, Families and Employees safe!

    Marilyn Portemont

If you don't know this beautiful lady already, her name is Marilyn Portemont. She is a longtime member and friend of the OABA along with the entire outdoor amusement industry. She was also our first time ever recipient of the OABA Lifetime Achievement Award earlier this year.

One of her greatest joys in life is attending the Indianapolis 500 race every year. This weeknd marks Marilyn's 71st consecutive year attending the Indy 500 Race... Yes, you read that right... 71st year. If you see her at the race, say hello to her and hear one of her many stories!

By the way, her jacket in the photos was hand made in honor of the OABA. Is your name on it as a member?... look close

    OABA Membership Update

The lifeblood of the OABA, for over 53 years, is our membership. It is who we serve and the reason we exist. As in any industry trade association, there are membership categories and dues which are paid to provide some of the strong financial backing to bring services to its members. The OABA is no different.

It has been brought up many times to the OABA staff that there are too many membership categories and confusion as to which membership category is applicable. For this reason, the OABA Membership Committee has been working towards simplifying and streamlining the categories to eliminate as much confusion as possible. This committee most recently met at the annual Spring Board meeting and presented recommendations to the Board of Directors, as the entire board must approve any changes. In some membership categories nothing has changed.

The following is a summary of the changes, if applicable, and a description of the categories that were voted on and approved by the board in April.

    • The Carnival categories were consolidated from 4 to 3 and are still based upon the number of rides owned by the show. Any show joins one of these categories.
    • Independent Ride Owners have been merged with Carnival category 3 (1-20 rides owned).
    • The Carnival Employee and Carnival Fan categories were merged. This category is for employees of shows and those who are retired or just continue to enjoy this business.
    • Circus Categories were consolidated from 9 categories to 2. The two Circus categories are Circus Producer and Circus Associate.
    • The two Concession Owner categories were merged into 1. This category is for food, game and other concessionaires.
    • The Carnival Executive category is for individuals who are part of a show, many of whom are family members, who want the $10,000 AD&D insurance coverage as a member, once the carnival has joined the OABA.

The result of the changes reduces OABA’s membership categories from 25 to 14. This will go a long way to simplify things for the membership, as well as the hardworking OABA staff. Hopefully, it will also eliminate many of the questions that come up every year at membership renewal time.

It is important to note that, as a result of the consolidation of the categories, some dues were increased, some remained the same, and some decreased. These changes were necessary to attempt to keep the total funds generated by the OABA membership dues the same as they were last year, and we are confident that this structure will accomplish that.

It’s been over 10 years since any wholesale changes have been made to our dues categories and fees. We are confident that these changes will be positive. Our members are appreciative of the services and advocacy your OABA dues provides, for which everyone pays. These changes will be effective with our 2019 dues year starting on July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019.

Please remember that your dues are critical for the services that the OABA provides to members. You will be hearing more about these efforts and services that the OABA works hard to provide through our new communication initiative to better inform and educate you on everything the OABA does for its members.
